In early 2024, around my 26th birthday, I was hospitalized a number of times due to recurring symptoms that aligned with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. After my first bone marrow biopsy, I was diagnosed with ALL. However, after switching from an outpatient cancer center to a renowned cancer hospital, there was some back-and-forth about my diagnosis and it was ultimately rescinded before I was to start chemotherapy. After a few months of continuing to be sick, I was finally diagnosed with HLH (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis) and was given targeted treatment therapy.
After a few months of feeling healthy, I started experiencing symptoms again and was hospitalized shortly after New Year’s 2025. After another biopsy, I was again diagnosed with B-cell ALL with much more certainty and started chemotherapy shortly after. I’m told by my oncologist that I’m the only patient he’s ever seen with both ALL and HLH diagnoses.
