Sending Kindness that Makes a Difference

Letters with Love is an opportunity for volunteers to provide Dear Jack’s LifeList participants with words of hope, encouragement, and love as they are actively going through treatment. All you need is paper and something to write with to participate!

The Letters with Love program runs quarterly – in February, May, August and November. During those times, Dear Jack staff hosts several one-hour, virtual card-making parties where you can hear about current participants and their stories. You may participate in writing notes even if you are unable to attend the virtual get-togethers.

How to Write Letters – Kids’ Version

A few things to remember when writing your letters:

  1. Please send the notes in either no envelope or unsealed envelopes
  2. Please no medical advice or treatment suggestions.
  3. If you write a note to a specific participant, make sure their name is on it.
  4. Our program participants come from all backgrounds and are diverse in their genders, ethnicities and beliefs. Please keep your notes supportive of all.
  5. Please avoid any messaging like “get well” or “you got this.” Our program participants sometimes have rough days and are going through things we can’t possibly know so we want to make sure to embrace them with the correct kind of positivity.

What Makes a Good Letter

Your Letters Make a Difference

"I got the package today with a TON of letters with love from volunteers all around! I've been crying and reading them all for the past 30 minutes. Some are painted and drawn, some include little gifts, but they're all filled with love and support during a time that feels so helpless and isolating. I can't thank you enough for all you've done for me."

- Myranda, LwL
LifeList Participant, 2023

"I just received all the letters in the mail and I’m so touched!! Thank you and to everyone at the Dear Jack family. I was having a bit of a hard day and when I got home from school they were the first thing I saw so it really cheered me up! It really came at the perfect time. I’ll cherish these, thank you!"

- Anna P.
LifeList Participant, 2020

"I can’t describe how happy these notes and letters made me. I was in amazement of how thoughtful people are to send such kind words. I opened them with my husband and we both had smiles on our faces the whole time. Hand-made cards, silly jokes, stickers, uplifting words of courage...such a beautiful gesture. Please thank those who were kind enough to make these for me. Dear Jack Foundation is amazing. "

- Dionne D.
LifeList Participant, 2020

"It may have been a coincidence, or it may have been perfect timing, but I received the letters on the same day that I found out the cancer I have spread to my brain. I was devastated and lost a lot of hope for my life that day. When I got home, I had the letters at my door. Reading those in that moment restored my hope, made me feel valid and I cried through reading them all because it was like a big warm hug that I absolutely needed to get through those days of planning the scary treatment and coming to terms with progression."

- Niky
LifeList Participant, 2022
