I was diagnosed with stage 4 gastric adenocarcinoma at the age of 27 on September 3rd, 2020. I had experienced gastric ulcers, h. pylori, and stomach issues for about six years. A year before my diagnosis, I started experiencing symptoms and thought it was an ulcer. I saw my GI regularly for 10 months and went to the ER multiple times during the pandemic, but never got answers other than “It’s probably just stress-related.” I had three endoscopies and a colonoscopy done that year, all with biopsies, but the only one that came back positive for cancer was the last one. I was originally misdiagnosed with duodenal cancer. According to all my scans, I was told that I had about a 3-4cm mass in my duodenum. It wasn’t until I woke up from surgery that I was told it was actually gastric cancer, and it was an 11cm tumor that originated in my stomach and had spread to my duodenum and pancreas.

Post-surgery, I did five rounds of chemotherapy. I had a lot of complications during chemo that led to multiple hospitalizations. Once we determined that my original treatment plan was not working for me, my second-line treatment option was an immunotherapy drug that I am currently on. Starting the immunotherapy was delayed by three months because my insurance would not cover it, even though my doctors recommended it and I was an ideal candidate for it with certain tumor markers. Their reasoning was that they only cover that drug for gastric cancer patients as a third line of treatment. I was able to finally get my treatment covered through the Merck Patient Assistance Program. I have been on that immunotherapy drug since March of 2021.
