I was diagnosed in January of this 2022 with stage 2 breast cancer. I had to leave grad school and return home and start treatment. I was 23 years old and had just graduated from undergrad in May of the year before and was coming back from winter break to start my second semester. It started with 16 rounds of chemotherapy, followed by a mastectomy, and five weeks of radiation which I am currently undergoing. I’ve also had to complete physical and occupational therapy because of lymphedema occurring after the removal of my lymph nodes.

I also had genetic testing done and have found out that I have the BRCA 2 genetic mutation that makes me more likely to develop cancers or for this cancer to come back. I’m at a higher risk for breast cancer, ovarian cancer, skin cancer, and pancreatic cancer. Now I have to get many tests and scans each year to make sure the cancer hasn’t come back or spread.
