My name is Mariela and I was 26-years-old when I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on December 9, 2020, during my 27th week of pregnancy with my second child. I underwent two regiments of chemotherapy before giving birth to a beautiful, tiny baby boy on February 9, 2021, at 37 weeks pregnant. My son was 1 week premature weighing 4 lbs 12oz, but through the grace of God was healthy and stable with no NICU requirements. During postpartum, I continued different forms of therapies to reach remission in April of 2021. Unfortunately, I became very neutropenic and caught a very scary infection in the summer. As a result, my marrow was too vulnerable to continue chemo, and so my medical team decided to prepare me for a stem cell transplant. Thankfully, my brother was a 100% match and I was able to receive his cells on October 5, 2021. There have been a few bumps in the road as I continue to recover during my first 100 days, but my first marrow (day 30) came back clean. We continue to pray and hope I remain in remission and succeed with good health and a cancer-free life.
