I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on May 2nd, 2020, during the beginning of the pandemic. The whole experience has had a lot of ups and downs for my husband and me. We previously lived in Bakersfield, CA with my grandmother, which is about 2 hours away from USC Norris, my treatment hospital. We would take the trip 2, 3, sometimes 4 days a week for chemo or labs. Around November we were told that they had found a match for a bone marrow transplant (BMT), however, it would require us to find a place to stay around the hospital, and with us being low income that wasn’t an option at that time. I was then transferred to UCLA for my BMT but was given the run around with insurance for months. These complications set back my BMT. My husband and I saved every little bit of money we could at that time to move to Los Angeles. It wasn’t easy but we managed, with the help of family, to finally make the move. Since insurance wasn’t letting me even see my doctor at UCLA I was then transferred back to USC Norris in May 2021. The ball started moving fast at that point between the move, treatment, and preparing for my BMT it all became a blur. I got my transplant on September 29th, 2021, and am currently recovering from that.
