My name is Jennifer and I was diagnosed with cancer on August 26th, 2021, just weeks after my 31st birthday and graduating as a Physician Assistant. My cancer was sneaky and it wasn’t until surgery on September 7th that the primary source of it being stage 4 gastric cancer was discovered. As a first-generation student, I was really excited to graduate and be able to care for my own patients in my community, but I ended up becoming the patient instead! I actually had job interviews lined up for the day after I initially went to the emergency room, but all of that has been put on hold for now. Though I have not been able to practice clinically, I have continued to mentor students during my treatment and am taking a year-long continuing medical education program in dermatology.
I am hopeful that I will be able to practice and want to work in either oncodermatology or pediatric oncology so that I can help others with cancer. When I’m not busy with treatment, mentoring, or studying, I spend most of my recovery time relaxing with my dog, Poe.
