In February 2022, at the age of 19, I was diagnosed with fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma, a rare form of liver cancer that only occurs in one-in-five million patients. I underwent 15 rounds of brutal chemotherapy where I lost feeling in my feet and couldn’t drink cold water. I took a chemo pill, and this caused my tumors to bleed in my liver. I was hospitalized for a month, and also got pancreatitis during that time.
Once I returned home, I spent 2 months on a feeding tube after losing 25 pounds and was extremely weak. I eventually regained my strength and began to tolerate the chemotherapy much better. In November of the same year, I underwent a thirteen hour surgery which I am still recovering from this day. I had several organs cut out- such as my liver, stomach and pancreas. I now take life long medication before every meal due to pancreatic enzyme insufficiency. I still struggle with problems today, but I’m so grateful to be in remission. I still am adjusting to my new digestive system and the surgery has made it so I can’t eat anything sugary again, but I try not to think of the negatives and am glad I am alive!
