I was diagnosed in August of 2021 with acute myeloid leukemia. I was 33 years old with a 13-month-old. I went to sleep feeling fine and woke up in the morning feeling very ill. I continued to get worse with fevers, fatigue, and trouble breathing. After about a week of this, I went to the ER. I did not know it at that time but that night would be my last night breastfeeding my son. After three days in the hospital, I was diagnosed with cancer and they immediately transferred me to a different hospital that could better help me. The next day I started chemotherapy and stayed at the hospital for 30 days. I had another round of outpatient chemotherapy, a heavy round of chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant, and 28 more days in the hospital, followed by several low-dose rounds of chemotherapy. The last bone marrow biopsy showed the cancer was gone but they said there could be undetected cancer still in my body so I am doing more rounds of chemo to hopefully kill any undetected cancer.
